Studies at universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Goldsmith's, London. Formerly: experience in psychiatric social work, social policy and public sector management, and innovation. Since 1992, Member of UK Parliament for Dulwich and West Norwood including: 1994-95, Opposition Whip; 1994-95 and 1996-97, Spokesperson on Health; 1995-96, Opposition Spokesperson for Women; 1997-99, Minister of State for Public Health, Department of Health; 1998, Privy Councillor; 1999-2001, Minister of State for Employment, Welfare to Work and Equal Opportunities, Department for Education and Employment; 2001-07, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport; since June 2007, current position, responsible for delivery of UK government's Olympic programme, also continues to have responsibility for humanitarian assistance, providing care and support to victims of major disasters in UK and internationally. 1993-2001, Visiting Fellow, Nuffield College, Oxford.
