Kate Crawford

Distinguished Research Professor, New York University Polytechnic Institute

Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research; Visiting Professor, MIT's Center for Civic Media; Senior Fellow, NYU's Information Law Institute. Over the last ten years, has researched the social, political and cultural contexts of large scale data and machine learning. Her research has addressed a wide range of data practices, including the ethics of big data, discrimination in machine learning, fairness and due process in algorithmic systems, and the power dynamics of AI. She is a co-founder of the Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics group (FATE) at Microsoft Research, and a co-PI of the NSF-supported Council for Big Data, Ethics and Society.
